Craighead County Judge Dale Haas said the $4.1 million Bono Lake project, which voters approved in 2007, still is waiting on permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The permits are needed before construction can begin to build the dam, which is the centerpiece of the project, he said.

The project has been in the making since 1999, Haas said. In 2007, Craighead County voters approved a temporary 1 percent sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  to pay for the dam, which would enlarge TO ENLARGE. Haas said the dam would help control flooding. The improved lake also would be used as an economic development tool for the county.

Haas said the county hopes to have the permit from the Corps in the next couple of months.

The project could be released for bid by the summer, and then it would take several months to build the dam, he said.

The county has had the money for the project sitting in reserve since the end of 2007.
