$40M Jamaica transport plan wins new federal cash boost.


Leadership from Congressman Gregory Meeks and Sen. Charles Schumer has produced federal funds Federal Funds

Funds deposited to regional Federal Reserve Banks by commercial banks, including funds in excess of reserve requirements.

Notes:
These non-interest bearing deposits are lent out at the Fed funds rate to other banks unable to meet overnight reserve
 for a $40 million infrastructure project which Greater Jamaica Development Corporation has launched.

GJDC has received funding from the Federal Transit Administration The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is an agency within the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) that provides financial and technical assistance to local public transit systems. The FTA is one of eleven modal administrations within the DOT.  and the Federal Highways Administration totaling $12 million towards the cost of this project.

The Port Authority has provided $2.2 million towards the renovation of the underpass and will donate to the Atlantic Avenue The following streets in the United States are named Atlantic Avenue:
  • Atlantic Avenue (Boston) in Massachusetts
  • Atlantic Avenue (New York City) in Brooklyn and Queens, New York
  • Atlantic Avenue (Atlantic City) in New Jersey, used in the Monopoly game
 Extension project a parcel of land purchase for the construction of the AirTrain trestle.

The City, State and Federal governments are expected to provide additional funds as the project proceeds.

These funds will create a setting for private development in and around the intermodal transit hub at the LIRR LIRR Long Island Rail Road (New York)  and AirTrain Station where the mixed-use, transit-oriented development A transit-oriented development (TOD) is a mixed-use residential or commercial area designed to maximize access to public transport, and often incorporates features to encourage transit ridership. , JFK Corporate Square, will be developed.

In May 2004, the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation (GJDC) signed a $2.9 million consultant contract to prepare preliminary design, environmental review and later develop construction documents.

The contract was awarded to Daniel Frankfurt, P.C., leading a consultant team that includes Mathews Neilson-landscape architecture, RTKL-urban design, AKRF-environmental studies and Russel Design Associates-graphics and signage.

Significant improvements will be undertaken around the transit hub including: development of retail space along the eastern edge of the LIRR underpass, a pedestrian bridge connecting new development at the 4th level of the AirTrain terminal and two new public open spaces to the north and south of the embankment along Sutphin Boulevard.

The project also includes improving access to the transit hub from the Van Wyck Van Wyck can refer to:
  • Robert Anderson Van Wyck (1849-1918), the first mayor of New York City after consolidation in 1898
  • F. Van Wyck Mason (1901-1978), an American historian and novelist
 Expressway by creating a connector loop on 95th and 94th Avenues and building the existing mapped Atlantic Avenue Extension between 94th and 95th Avenues.

Together these improvements will address pedestrian safety and amenity, ease movement from one transportation mode to another, decrease vehicular congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.
