$4 Million Robot Debuts in West Palm Tomorrow; CyberKnife Fights Cancer with Missile-Guided Precision.
The CyberKnife CyberKnife is the name of a frameless robotic radiosurgery system invented by John R. Adler, a Stanford University Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology. The CyberKnife system is sold by the company Accuray, located in Sunnyvale, California. Center of Palm Beach:
What: The CyberKnife Center of Palm Beach will treat its first
patient tomorrow, bringing the newest technology to fight
cancer and tumors to residents of Palm Beach County and
the Treasure Coast. Using a robotic arm and missile
guidance technology, CyberKnife delivers targeted doses
of radiation to often inoperable tumors with
sub-millimeter accuracy. The center marks just the third
CyberKnife in Florida and 29th in the United States.
When: Wednesday, October 12, 2005
9 a.m.
The patient will be treated at 8 a.m. She and her doctor
will be available for interviews at 9 a.m. The
CyberKnife robot will be available for demonstrations and
b-roll footage from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Who: The center's first patient is a 49-year-old Palm Beach
County resident. She is currently fighting a brain
tumor.
Where: 10335 North Military Trail
Suite B
Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410
Phone: (561) 799-2828
Background: Using image-guided radiosurgery, the CyberKnife can
accurately target and deliver maximum radiation doses
needed to attack cancer/tumors and not damage healthy
tissue. By limiting irradiation to normal tissue, the
CyberKnife is able to deliver a higher and more effective
dose. Shaping the treatment to the patient's anatomy is
one of the great advantages of image-guided technology,
such as the CyberKnife. The center treats tumors and
cancer in the brain, head and neck, spine, lungs, liver,
breast and pancreas. Treatment is covered by major
insurance carriers and costs 20 to 45 percent less than
conventional surgery.
