$32 MILLION EXPANSION COMPLETED BY DETROIT-AREA AUTOMOTIVE SUPPLIER
DETROIT, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The Detroit-based Milford Fabricating Company has completed a $32 million facilities improvement program, Chairman Edward Nishon announced today.
The project features a 69,000-square-foot building at 19200 Glendale on the city's northwest side and includes equipment purchases such as mechanical presses, spotting presses, computer numerical controlled milling machines, coordinate measuring machines, laser cutting machines and CAD/CAM equipment.
"The Detroit location is ideal to serve the automotive industry in Michigan," Nishon said. "This expansion will be a continuation of the significant investment in high-tech equipment already made at Milford.
"Automotive manufacturers are reorganizing and trimming their operations to become more efficient and reduce costs. At the same time, they are moving in the direction of high-tech engineering and manufacturing to improve quality in order to produce world-class vehicles at a competitive price.
"OEMs are looking for full-service organizations to assume more responsibility in the areas of design, engineering and manufacturing. They are requesting early vendor involvement in the design and development of the final product. Milford Fabricating fills that role."
Milford, celebrating its 40th year in business, employs approximately 500 people.
Milford, a medium size, multi-million-dollar operation, counts both traditional and transplant companies as its customers.
 Nishon disclosed the following details:
-- The major expansion at the firm's Detroit prototype complex would add 20 new skilled jobs.
-- Intensification of recruitment and training for skilled trade positions at Milford Fabricating's Detroit facilities.
 Very Large Apprentice Program
Nishon noted that Milford Fabricating currently has 52 apprentices in training as well as 17 skilled tradesmen in the advanced computer- integrated manufacturing training programs.
Milford Fabricating, a subsidiary of The Budd Company since 1969, was established in 1952 with three employees in an 800-square-foot building in Milford, Mich. One year later, the company moved to Detroit.
Milford Fabricating serves customers in the automotive, truck, aerospace, farm implement, appliance, office equipment and recreational industries.
The Budd Company is recognized internationally as a world quality supplier to the automotive industry. As a subsidiary of Thyssen AG, of Duisburg, Germany, Budd is backed by an international partner in the automotive industry with expertise in materials, components and systems.
