Noun 1.
Dario Frommer Dario Frommer (born October 22, 1963 in Long Beach, California) was a member of the California State Assembly from 2000 until 2006. He served as Majority Leader from 2004 until 2006. Frommer also served as Chair of the Health Committee.  has asked to include $3 million in the 2002 state budget to help purchase the Oakmont V property in the Verdugo Mountains The Verdugo Mountains are a small mountain range located just south of the western San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, Southern California, The United States of America (USA). The range is commonly known simply as the Verdugos.  - the proposed site of a controversial housing development.

Frommer, D-Glendale, said Thursday the request, if approved, would add to a $5 million fund held by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  to purchase the 238-acre property, where 572 homes are proposed. The state allocated the initial funding in 1999.

``If there is an opportunity for the property to be purchased, we have to be realistic and be in the ball park in terms of (money)," said Frommer.

Lee Gregg, vice president of Gregg's Artistic Homes, which owns the property, said he is not interested in selling the land.

``We didn't buy the land to sell it,'' he said. ``If the government wants to buy it, they have the right to do that. What we have said is we will not fight or oppose if they are purchasing the property through legal means, which is condemnation Condemnation

Under the law, if the government condemns a property, it must compensate the owner for the fair-market value of the land, which is in dispute.

While Gregg said the property is appraised at more than $40 million, others contend the value is much lower.

The conservancy has done its own appraisal but the information is confidential until the acquisition is completed to protect the seller and buyer, said Rorie Skei, the conservancy's deputy director of natural resources.

Gregg and conservancy officials both have confirmed that while they have had discussions, there has not been any serious negotiations on selling the land.

Frommer expects to find out by June whether his request will be approved.

The Oakmont property is considered the last major open space in the Verdugo Mountains.

``It has thousands of oak trees, wildlife, plants and wild flowers,'' said Frommer. ``As we grow as a community and state, we have to take care to preserve open space - nature in its original state - not only for ourselves, but for future generations.''
