about $1 million off the city's $7.5 million annual budget to operate and maintain the bus fleet, said Bob Murphy, city transit coordinator.

``It should be much less expensive because the costs of fueling, washing and storing our buses will be less,'' Murphy said. ``As it is now, all of our fuel is brought in here by tanker truck in the middle of the night, and our buses are all washed by hand. The new facility would have fuel tanks and an automatic washing system.''

The city also spends over $100,000 annually to store its buses at three locations: the Santa Clarita Metrolink Metrolink is the name of several transport services throughout the world:

When the city took control of the bus system in 1991, the small maintenance facility in the industrial center adequately served the city's fleet of 39 buses. Since then, however, the city's fleet has grown to 72 buses and the number of passenger boardings has increased from 400,000 to 4.5 million annually, Murphy said.
