$3 MILLION GIFT TO HOSPITAL LOCAL 'ANGEL' TO HELP FUND CARDIAC LAB.

Roberta G. Veloz's gift will help fund a cardiac-catheterization laboratory to help people who come to the hospital because of heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems.

Procedures in the lab will allow doctors to see heart chambers, valves and arteries that can get clogged. Physicians can treat patients with angioplasty angioplasty (ăn`jēōplăs'tē), any surgical repair of a blood vessel, especially

balloon angioplasty or percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, a treatment of coronary artery disease.
, using a catheter-guided balloon to open narrow arteries.

About 250 people come to the emergency room each year with heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems. They are transferred to other medical centers because the hospital doesn't have a place to treat them.

 Kenneth Tam said getting patients to other facilities can be difficult, since many hospitals in the region are busy and full. Because of that, he never knows how long it will take to transfer a patient.

``Having a cath lab A catheterization laboratory or cath lab is an examination room in a hospital or clinic with diagnostic imaging equipment to support the catheterization procedure.
