$29 Million Award for MTA.


In a stinging rebuke that could make it more difficult for the construction giant to land public contracts, a Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Superior Court jury ordered Tutor-Saliba Corp. to pay more than $29.5 million to the MTA (1) (Message Transfer Agent or Mail Transfer Agent) The store and forward part of a messaging system. The award was less than the $41 million sought by the MTA, but it provoked an angry response from Tutor-Saliba officials who vowed to appeal.

The award represents a huge victory for the MTA, which presented evidence that the contractor submitted false claims for payment, used fronts posing as minority subcontractors and committed more than 1,000 acts of other unfair business practices. At one point, the firm stopped quality inspection because of a contract dispute, MTA officials said.
