$250,000 Grant From AT&T Aids Kennedy Presidential Library Effort to Digitize Archives to Enable Public Access via the Internet.

The grant from AT&T will enable the Kennedy Library Foundation to retain a Project Manager and three highly skilled archivists to support the National Archive's efforts to organize and catalogue the collection in a manner that will enable historians, academics and the general public to easily search and find specific information within the 48 million documents, images and recordings. The project to digitize the collection is expected to take more than 10 years and will begin with the official papers of President Kennedy. The initiative to digitize a presidential library collection is the first of its kind in the nation.

Among the documents being digitally preserved are many used by President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, including a map recently recovered from a private collection on behalf of the Kennedy Presidential Library by the National Archives National Archives, official depository for records of the U.S. federal government, established in 1934 by an act of Congress. Although displeasure concerning the method of keeping national records was voiced in Congress as early as 1810, the United States continued  and Records Administration. The map (see accompanying photos) was used by President Kennedy to visualize the location of Soviet Missile batteries located throughout Cuba.
