As of the end of July, some 312.7 million semipostal stamps have been purchased, according to Don Smeraldi, spokesperson for USPS. More than 400 million stamps have been printed.

"Our initial thought was if we sell out of our print run of these things back in 1998 we could potentially raise $16 million," noted Smeraldi.

The stamp bears the words USA and First-Class and the background of the vertically formatted stamp design features overlapping areas of pastel blue, yellow, orange and green.

The top of the stamp bears the words BREAST CANCER and a black line depicting a female figure suggesting the "goddess of the hunt or fight" is another key element of the stamp.

The phrases "FUND THE FIGHT. FIND A CURE." appear across the stamp in a clockwise, circular pattern, outlining where the figure's right breast would be.

The USPS accepted proposals for its next semipostal stamp until the August 31 deadline. The new stamp, which Smeraldi said could raise money for any nonprofit cause, will be available next July and run through 2004.
