 arena, fair officials said Thursday. Standing in front of the fairground's 65-foot-tall clock tower newly marked for the R. Rex Parris Show Arena, Parris said he and his brothers raised farm animals as boys, and he considers it a valuable experience in growing up.

``I think this is one of the most important programs young people can get into,'' said Parris, accompanied by his brother Rob, also an attorney in the firm.

The new arena will be connected to the clock tower and similar in appearance to the red-and-white livestock barns on each side, fair officials said.

Officials hope to start construction after the 2005 fair, which starts today and will end Sept. 5. They hope to have the arena ready for the 2006 fair next August.

Parris will be leading the effort to secure the remaining funding for the arena, expected to cost $700,000.

``The goal is to raise $700,000 and finish the construction by the 2006 fair,'' fair board president LeeRoy Halley said.

The fair's previous largest donations were two 4,000-square-foot exhibition halls finished in time for this fair. The Van Dam van Dam (Dutch for "of the dam") may refer to:
