Red imported fire ant infestations were discovered in the state in October. The department identified 23 infestations in Orange County, as well as nests in southern Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and Riverside counties.

The ants can give painful stings and protect their nests or mounds aggressively.

A public education campaign also will be launched to alert residents of heath risks from fire ant stings as well as how to eliminate the pests from their property.

The agriculture department will continue plant quarantine enforcement and monitor areas to stop the spread of the ants.
