$2,000 GRANT TO BENEFIT SANTA CLARITA MUSICIANS.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - A $2,000 grant from Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich Michael Dennis Antonovich (born 1939 in Los Angeles, California) is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors representing the Fifth District, which covers northern Los Angeles County, the Antelope, Santa Clarita, Pasadena, and parts of the San Fernando and San  is being used to create a scholarship for young Santa Clarita musicians.

The money will be used to launch the Michael D. Antonovich Music Scholarship Fund, which will help pay for college fees, small group lessons and instruments.

``It is my hope that a contribution will expand your existing audience building and expand educational programs,'' Antonovich said in a written statement. ``As your audiences grow, the support from your community will grow.''

It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Youth Orchestra perform in May at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. .

``After hearing these youngsters play, I knew this was a group that deserved special support,'' Jones said.

The Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra Foundation, which supports and raises money to support the local instrumental music group, voted to use the fund to begin the scholarship, which was already in the planning stages.

``We decided that it would be a great idea to start a scholarship fund in his name,'' said Mimi Schiff, foundation board president. ``He gave us the seed money.

``There are many talented youngsters in our community who would benefit greatly from the instrumental music program we provide,'' Schiff added. ``Having a scholarship fund to help them pay the costs of the program will allow many deserving de·serv·ing

The Youth Orchestra began as a music program at CalArts in the 1960s and was moved to the College of the Canyons in 1990.

Students, 8 to 22, who wish to participate in the orchestra can sign up for one of three classes at the college. More than 90 students have enrolled.

``We know music education can make a dramatic difference in a child's development, and we are dedicated to providing musical training to as many children as possible,'' Schiff said.
