$165,000 RAISED FOR BENEFIT CANCER SOCIETY WILL GET PROCEEDS.

QUARTZ HILL - The American Cancer Society's ninth annual Relay for Life Relay For Life (often shortened to Relay) is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, and is now held in many other countries. It is an overnight event designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures, celebrate survivorship and raise money  in Quartz Hill raised more than $165,000 in the fight against cancer.

The 24-hour event, which drew nearly 300 cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with  and more than 1,800 registered walkers, was a capstone for the months-long project designed to celebrate cancer survivorship survivorship n. the right to receive full title or ownership due to having survived another person. Survivorship is particularly applied to persons owning real property or other assets, such as bank accounts or stocks, in "joint tenancy.  and raise funds to support the society's programs of patient support, public education, advocacy and research.

``We are delighted with the huge growth of this event in our community,'' said Ron Emard of Robertson's Palmdale Honda, a throat cancer survivor and chairman of the Quartz Hill Relay. ``The number of participating cancer survivors and team members again increased this year over the previous year, touching many more lives with hope. We are grateful to all the participants, walkers, survivors and volunteers for their contribution to the fight against cancer.''

Joe Walker Middle School in Quartz Hill produced 10 teams with nearly 100 members and raised $7,000. Palmdale High School's Health Careers Academy provided more than 150 students to walk and volunteer at the event, providing the main source for youth volunteers.

The luminaria were lit in the stadium at Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Founded in 1964, it is the third oldest comprehensive high school in the Antelope Valley High School District (AVHSD).  as participants read the notes made in memory or in honor of loved ones in their fight against cancer.

``It is wonderful to see how many survivors took part in this Relay for Life. It's a sign that progress is indeed taking place. But we can do more - we have to find the answers and put an end to this disease,'' Emard said.
