beyond the $52.3 million figure needed to keep the project alive.

County officials had set a June 30 deadline for raising the $52.3 million as solid evidence that the hall can be paid for.

Officials involved in the announcement refused to disclose the donor until a downtown news conference scheduled for today at 9:30 a.m. at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The museum is across the street from the project site, where so far only a parking garage for the proposed hall has been built.

The donation comes less than a month after the philanthropic arm of downtown-based Atlantic Richfield Company announced that it would contribute $10 million toward the stalled project.

Eli Broad Eli Broad (born June 6, 1933) a native of Detroit, Michigan is a Jewish American billionaire who lives in Los Angeles, California. His last name is pronounced as rhyming with road.

Broad is well known for his philanthropy and extensive art collection.
, president of SunAmerica Inc. and head of the private fund-raising drive, said the donation will go a long way toward meeting the $115 million needed to complete the hall, a futuristic structure that would become the new home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic The Los Angeles Philharmonic (LAP) is an American orchestra based in Los Angeles, California, United States. ``I'm very optimistic,'' Broad said. ``With this and other donations we've received, we should be able to move ahead on completion of the project.''

Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said he was impressed with the private fund-raising effort to revive the project.

``With the exception of the donation from the Disney family, this is the largest gift ever made to the Music Center, and it exceeds the promise of the Disney Hall backers,'' Yaroslavsky said.

``This will serve as a huge confidence-builder to the arts community and the county as a whole. This builds momentum for the project,'' he said.

In addition to Broad and Yaroslavsky, today's news conference is scheduled to include Mayor Richard Riordan; Los Angeles Philharmonic Executive Vice President Ernest Fleischmann; Andrea Van de Kamp, chairwoman of the Music Center Board of Governors; and MOCA MOCA Museum of Contemporary Art

 director Richard Koshalek.

In recent weeks, Riordan, Broad and other prominent civic and business leaders have stepped forward to pledge their political capital, and even their personal wealth, in support of the hall.

They see the hall as one essential component of efforts aimed at reviving downtown. Other projects in various stages of development include a proposed sports arena-entertainment complex at the Convention Center and plans for a sports corridor stretching from Dodger Stadium to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum For board track racing circuit, see .
