$12 awarded to farmland protection plan.


Governor George E. Pataki today announced that 16 municipalities will receive $12 million from the Environmental Protection Fund's Farmland Protection Fund to protect the additional 6,000 acres of active farmland he announced in his 2004 State of the State Address The State of the State Address (alternatively Condition of the State Address) is a speech customarily given once each year by the governors of most states of the United States. .

The additional 6,000 acres brings the total acres of open space protected during the Governor's tenure to more than 500,000.

This year's round of Farmland Protection funding includes $3 million for the protection of farmland on Long Island, nearly $1.5 million for the Capital Region, more than $2.4 million for the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley refers to the canyon of the Hudson River and its adjacent communities in New York State, generally from northern Westchester County northward to the cities of Albany and Troy.

The Farmland Protection Program provides financial assistance to counties and towns to support local farmland protection activities. Once the State awards the requested funds, the municipality MUNICIPALITY. The body of officers, taken collectively, belonging to a city, who are appointed to manage its affairs and defend its interests.  purchases the development rights on the farmland, which permits farm owners to utilize the equity in the land without selling the farm. As of today's announcement, 28,000 acres of the 500,000 preserved are agricultural lands.

The Farmland Protection Program is open to all counties in the State that have approved agricultural and farmland protection plans and other municipalities that have a local farmland protection plan in place.
