Lotto fever has again hit California, where the jackpot for tonight's Super Lotto drawing is $106 million -- the highest since August 2002 and just $1 million shy of the largest prize in Super Lotto history.

Nazy Kiamanesh, owner of the 7-Eleven at Ventura Boulevard Ventura Boulevard is one of the primary east-west thouroughfares in the San Fernando Valley; as it was originally a part of the El Camino Real (the trail between Spanish missions), Ventura Boulevard is the oldest route in the San Fernando Valley. Celebration of it began during the American Revolution.  holiday weekend slowed the usual rush that ushers in big jackpots.

``It is not as busy as it should be because of the holiday, but tomorrow should be,'' Kiamanesh said.

But not everyone was dissuaded from buying tickets by Tuesday's traditional picnics and fireworks fireworks: see pyrotechnics.

Retiree Rachel Dorfman said she's excited by the possibility of winning a big jackpot.

``Honestly, $1 million is plenty for me, but the big amount gives you this boost to buy,'' Dorfman said.

But among prospective winners was also a definite sentiment of philanthropy.

``I'm already a giver,'' Dorfman said. ``If I won this much money, I would just give more.''

Sunny Yoo, owner of the Yogurt Delite near the 7-Eleven, said she never spends more than $5 on lotto tickets, and would donate most of the winnings to charity.

``I only need one or two million for myself,'' Yoo said. ``The rest I would use to start a nonprofit.''

For those seeking to give, even buying a single lotto ticket allows them to contribute.

California's public schools receive 34 cents of every $1 ticket sold -- meaning a $63 million bump for education from this jackpot alone.

And any winner would be able to pay the bills from the world's biggest July Fourth party. According to according to

The Shell gas station at Canoga Avenue and Sherman Way sold a winning Super Lotto ticket in February -- the first time ever for a Canoga Park retailer.

Employee Llewellyn Lobo said the station's earlier good fortune, coupled with tonight's near-record jackpot, should cause a definite increase in their sales.

But for some, the lottery is more about the challenge than the win.

Developer Pete Barbella said playing Super Lotto is about the rush he feels about possibly beating the odds. After buying $200 worth of quick-picks at the Woodland Hills 7-Eleven, Barbella smiled and asked the clerk to rub his tickets for luck.

``You know if I win, we win, man,'' Barbella said.

``I know the odds are, like, 18 million to one,'' said Barbella, underestimating the actual odds of 41,416,353 to 1. ``But it's the rush of knowing I can beat them.''
