$1 million plant converts salvage to profitable cut stock: 1967.


Short togs and low-grade timber formerly left to rot in the forests are now processed to realize more than 15 cents per board foot as cut stock in the new $1 million Industrial Products Division plant in Arcata Redwood Co. of Arcata, CA. The yield is 5% to 10% regular lumber lumber, term for timber that has been cut into boards for use as a building material. The major steps in producing lumber involve logging (the felling and preparation of timber for shipment to sawmills), sawing the logs into boards, grading the boards according to  and an additional 25% in short lengths. Residual material is reduced to chips.

More than 10 years ago, Arcata Redwood started experimenting with waste recovery through fingerjointing and by producing chips for hardboard hardboard: see composition board.  manufacturers. What was needed was a plan to use the sound portions of the scrap for higher profit items.

Typical products turned out from the small pieces are drawer backs, sides and bottoms; cigar box stock; candy and glace fruit Glace fruit is a term for fruit preserved in a sugar syrup.
