SANTA CLARITA - The state has notified 767 Santa Clarita Valley high school students they will receive $1,000 Governor's Scholarships for college.

The ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders scored in the top 10 percent of their school or the top 5 percent of the state in exams taken last spring.

Awards are based on the English/language arts and mathematics sections of the Stanford 9 portion of the STAR tests, standardized exams issued annually statewide to high school students.

The scholarships will be deposited into the Golden State Scholarshare Trust until the students enroll in college. The scholarships can be applied to cover educational costs for any public or private accredited post-secondary institution in the nation.

High-scoring students are eligible for the $1,000 awards for each of their underclass years in high school, plus an additional $2,500 for high achievement in certain Advanced Placement classes.

Saugus High School students won 200 of the awards, 197 students are from Valencia High, 185 from Hart, 178 from Canyon and seven from Academy of the Canyons, a small Hart program affiliated with the College of the Canyons. Letters have been sent to the award recipients, informing them of the scholarships and assigning them personal identification numbers needed to claim their grants. Winners have until June 30, 2006, to claim their awards.
