SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The state has notified 767 Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  high school students they will receive $1,000 Governor's Scholarships for college.

The ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders scored in the top 10 percent of their school or the top 5 percent of the state in exams taken last spring.

Awards are based on the English/language arts and mathematics sections of the Stanford 9 portion of the STAR tests, standardized exams issued annually statewide to high school students.

The scholarships will be deposited into the Golden State Scholarshare Trust until the students enroll in college. The scholarships can be applied to cover educational costs for any public or private accredited accredited

recognition by an appropriate authority that the performance of a particular institution has satisfied a prestated set of criteria.

High-scoring students are eligible for the $1,000 awards for each of their underclass years in high school, plus an additional $2,500 for high achievement in certain Advanced Placement classes.

 students won 200 of the awards, 197 students are from Valencia High, 185 from Hart, 178 from Canyon and seven from Academy of the Canyons, a small Hart program affiliated with the College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Letters have been sent to the award recipients, informing them of the scholarships and assigning them personal identification numbers needed to claim their grants. Winners have until June 30, 2006, to claim their awards.
