"I never knew saving water could be so beautiful," said Howser. "There are so many different plants that you could use to make your garden beautiful and water-wise."

The segment takes viewers through two water agencies' water-efficient demonstration gardens to learn how water-wise gardening techniques can translate into real water savings, up to 50 percent for homeowners. These gardens are a valuable resource for Californians who want to learn more about the water system and how the actions we take--both indoors and outdoors--affect our water system.

The Sacramento Suburban Water District's (SSWD SSWD Services for Students With Disabilities ) Water Efficient Landscape garden and Western Municipal Water District's (WMWD WMWD Western Municipal Water District (Riverside, CA) ) "Landscapes Southern California Style" garden show community members how to conserve water by planting California-friendly plants, using more efficient irrigation irrigation, in agriculture, artificial watering of the land. Although used chiefly in regions with annual rainfall of less than 20 in. (51 cm), it is also used in wetter areas to grow certain crops, e.g., rice.  techniques and implementing hardscapes into backyard landscaping. Both agencies offer free classes and workshops on water-wise gardening.

"We need to demonstrate the beauty of these kinds of settings, low maintenance and water-efficient," said John Rossi, general manager, Western Municipal Water District. "Water efficiency is the most important issue we're trying to get across."

"We want to save water, not only for our region (Sacramento), but for the entire state," said Linda Higgins, water conservation coordinator, Sacramento Suburban Water District. "Water districts throughout the state have free services available that can help you become water-wise."
