"Visitable" housing is aim of Manitoba's new housing design advice program.

WINNIPEG Winnipeg, city, Canada
Winnipeg (wĭn`ĭpĕg), city (1991 pop. 616,790), provincial capital, SE Man., Canada, at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers.
 -- A new term has entered the discussion of accessible housing. The term used by Manitoba's Family Services and Housing Minister Christine Melnick Christine Melnick is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. She is currently a Cabinet Minister in the government of New Democratic Party (NDP) Premier Gary Doer.

Born in Winnipeg, Melnick received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Manitoba and subsequently
 is "visitable" which means making as many residences as possible accessible for any person with a disability who might live in or visit the dwelling dwelling

"Basic visitable design features for a home include at least one entrance with no step, wider doorways and hallways, and a bathroom A bathroom is a room that may have different functions depending on the cultural context. In the most literal sense, the word bathroom means "a room with a bath". Melnick introduced the term as she announced the province's new housing consultation service will aid in the design of accessible and "visitable" for people with disabilities. The service will be located in Manitoba's Family Services and Housing Department.

The design consultant will work with government agencies, builders, developers, community groups, architects and the public to assist in the development and further promotion of design features so homes under construction can be made more accessible or visitable for a person with a disability.

The consultant will build the expertise and knowledge of this unique approach to housing design by:

* conducting research on visitable housing approaches and identify best practices from other jurisdictions;

* identifying technical barriers and ways to overcome them in residential construction;

* developing plans to promote these housing design features in new residential construction; and

* creating educational materials to inform government agencies, municipal officials, developers, community groups, builders, architects and the public about the concept of visitability Visitability is an international movement to change home construction practices so that virtually all new homes--whether or not designated for residents who currently have mobility impairments--offer a few specific accessibility features. .
