"Venture Philanthropy versus Vulture Philanthropy" -- November 17, at the Commonwealth Club of California.

Venture philanthropy is characterized by:
  • willingness to experiment and try new approaches
 versus Vulture vulture, common name for large birds of prey of temperate and tropical regions. The Old World vultures (family Accipitridae) are allied to hawks and eagles; the more ancient American vultures and condors are of a different family (Cathartidae) with distant links to  Philanthropy" at the November 17 edition of the Nonprofit Study Section.

In the ongoing debate over social policy, almost all sides believe that new approaches are needed. "Venture Philanthropy" is a charitable endeavor based on risk-taking, innovation and entrepreneurial spirit based on the business model.

Some believe that business has what it takes to bring a new model of philanthropy into being. But is this so? Bruce Sievers will lay out the arguments of using venture capital model and the problems with it, followed by a lively question and answer period.

Bruce Sievers received his Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University Stanford University, at Stanford, Calif.; coeducational; chartered 1885, opened 1891 as Leland Stanford Junior Univ. They provide leadership expertise, legal services and networking opportunities and other services to participating members and the general public. . For fifty years, the Council on Foundations has helped foundation staff, trustees and board members in their day-to-day grant making activities.

Through one-to-one technical assistance, research, publications, conferences and workshops, legal services legal services n. the work performed by a lawyer for a client. , and a wide array of other services, the Council addresses the important issues and challenges that face foundations and corporate funders.

"Venture Philanthropy versus Vulture Philanthropy" will be held Tuesday, November 17, at The Commonwealth Club of California, 595 Market St., 2nd Fl., San Francisco. There will be a reception beginning at 4:45 p.m. with the program following at 5:15 p.m. Tickets are $9 for the general public, $6 for Commonwealth Club members, and $3 for nonprofit staff and board members.
