"Upbacks": an interval running workout.


? In your December 1997 Power Line, you mentioned an interval routine which could be run indoors in bad weather. Would you mind describing it for us.

The routine we referred to is called "Upbacks," and it can be performed outdoors just as easily. When we have to go indoors, we use it on our basketball floor and encourage our players to use a court shoe court shoe

Outdoors, we run the routine on our astroturf surface, though it can also be run on grass (wearing cleats to avoid slipping). Caution: Do not run this drill on a wet surface. It would be better to switch to the Ladder or to do 110's.

"UPBACKS" PROTOCOL

In running "Upbacks" (or any other of our running routines), we divide our team into three groups:

Group 1 wide receiver/defensive backs.

Group 2 quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, linebackers.

Group 3 offensive/defensive linemen n. pl. 1. the football players who line up on the line of scrimmage.

Running Times

Group 1: 14 seconds

Group 2: 16 seconds

Group 3: 18 seconds

Rest Interval

All Groups: 45-60 seconds.

Early in the off-season (March-May), we use a 60-second rest interval. As summer camp approaches (June-July), we decrease the rest interval to 45 seconds.

Number of Reps: all groups, 12.

Distance Covered Each Rep: 60 yds.

Total Volume of Work: 720 yds.

Movements Performed: 4.

1. Run forward, back-pedal.

2. Carioca.

3. Lateral shuffle

4. Run forward and touch line with a hand, and return.

Running Area

45 yards. Additional room is needed to overrun 1. overrun - A frequent consequence of data arriving faster than it can be consumed, especially in serial line communications. For example, at 9600 baud there is almost exactly one character per millisecond, so if a silo can hold only two characters and the machine takes  at finish line.

DESCRIPTION

Rep 1, Sprint Forward, Back-Pedal:

From a standing position, the players sprint forward 5 yards, touch the 5-yard line with their foot, and back-pedal 5 yards to the starting line. Next, they immediately sprint forward 10 yards, touch the 10-yard line, and back-pedal 10 yards.

Next, they sprint forward 15 yards, touch the 15-yard line, and back-pedal 15 yards through the starting line.

(See: closing argument) : Your athletes have completed 60 yards of running forward and backward. They rest 45 to 60 seconds, then move on to the next rep.

Rep 2, Carioca:

The same protocol as #1 is used.

Rep 3, Lateral Shuffle:

The same protocol as before is used. We encourage the players to bend their knees, avoid bobbing up and down, and keep the head level. Our coaching point is click the heels and do not cross over with the feet.

After the appropriate rest level, the players move on to the last rep.

Rep 4:

The players run forward, touch the line with a hand, and then return and touch the starting line with the same hand. (See photo.)

The above sequence is repeated three times for a total of 12 reps.

Whenever performing "Upbacks" outside, we use the yard lines on our football field as markers, and use the same starting line for all three groups. Group 1 will run the first interval, followed by Group 2, and then Group 3.

Whenever we run inside, we place a strip of tape on the floor at 5, 10, and 15 yard intervals. Note: Cones Cones

We give our first group (wide receivers and defensive backs) a "Set, Go!", and they run the first interval.

When they finish the first interval, we immediately start Group 2. When Group 2 crosses the finish line, we immediately start Group 3.

After Group 3 finishes the first interval (run forward and back pedal pedal /ped·al/ (ped´'l) pertaining to the foot or feet.

REST INTERVAL

We use Group 1 for timing the rest between intervals. As soon as Group 1 finishes a run, we start a watch to time the rest interval. While Group 1 is resting, Group 2 runs, followed by Group 3. As soon as 45 seconds has elapsed e·lapse

You can divide your players into as many different groups as you wish or run them all at once.

As we have mentioned many times, no drill or exercise can duplicate DUPLICATE. The double of anything.

Our players use it whenever they have to adapt to running conditions other than in a straight line.

Coaching Tips: All of our routines (lifting and running) are designed to meet the specific needs of the players. If you decide to adopt any of these ideas, we suggest that you modify the information to best meet the needs of your players.

For example, the bodyweights of our players range from 180 to almost 340 pounds. Since the average high school team has a more homogenous homogenous - homogeneous  population, you may have to adjust your running times accordingly.
