"There are no plaques on our spirits": an interview with Eric Small, Director of Eric Small Yoga Program.


AN INTERVIEW WITH ERIC SMALL, DIRECTOR OF ERIC SMALL YOGA PROGRAM

Eric Small was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS 45 years ago. He has practiced yoga for 40 of them. Today, at 66, he is a certified instructor of Iyengar yoga, a gentle yoga that uses adapted poses (called asanas asanas (äˑ·se·näsˈ),
n.pl in Ayurveda, exercises based on stretching, deep breathing, and concentration.
) to meet individual abilities and needs. The Eric Small Yoga Program in association with the Society's Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. "Regardless of what MS symptoms may arise, the asanas can be adapted for continued practice. You don't have to wrap your legs behind your ears or stand on your head to practice. Anyone can do yoga--even sitting in a wheelchair or lying in bed.

"I see people becoming empowered by yoga every day," Mr. Small concluded. "They experience a series of small successes, and this adds up. Many go on to join classes with people who do not have MS."
