The conference, attended by more than 4,300 attendees, mixed perfect parts of education, communication, product demonstrations, networking and social events into three action-packed days and nights. The conference featured a record seven Platinum Sponsors and 270 vendor companies. It also was greatly supported by more than 100 gracious industry volunteers from throughout the host state of Florida.

At the conference, NAA members were treated to keynote addresses delivered by former New York City New York City: see New York, city.

NAA also welcomed in the eighth inductee to the NAA Hall of Fame when Jim Hepfner, CAPS, CPM (1) (Critical Path Method) A project management planning and control technique implemented on computers. Hepfner President, Hepfner, Smith, Airhart & Day, Dallas, was introduced by 2000 inductee and long-time friend Rob Johnston, CAPS, CPM, The Pinnacle Companies, Atlanta.

Hepfner thanked NAA and all of its staff and membership for the opportunity to serve the multifamily industry. He has been a member since 1986 and has attended more than 80 Board meetings.

"Jim Hepfner is an exceptional human being who has never failed to answer the call from NAA, TAA TAA - Track Average Amplitude  or AAGD AAGD Apartment Association of Greater Dallas (Dallas, TX) ," said Johnston. "He is admired and respected throughout the country for his great leadership abilities and his special compassion for people."

In his acceptance speech, Hepfner said, more than anything, he values the friendships he has created while serving those in the industry. "Friends are people who are walking in, when everybody else is walking out," said Hepfner.

The NAA Conference Committee was chaired by Nancy Nicolosi, Schomac Property Management, Tucson, Ariz.

The more than 35 educational sessions brought attendees up to date on other crucial and timely topics, such as mold litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right. The act or process of bringing a lawsuit in and of itself; a judicial contest; any dispute.

Other speakers shared tips on pertinent professional skills such as communicating with staff, motivation, setting goals, personal development; and long-term planning.

One session on Fair Housing was particularly popular as it offered attendees the opportunity to vote interactively from their seat on certain aspects of the presentation by using electronic voting Electronic voting (also known as e-voting) is a term encompassing several different types of voting, embracing both electronic means of casting a vote and electronic means of counting votes.  buttons.

Educational Speaker Bruce Wilkinson Bruce Wilkinson is a Christian teacher and author. He was born (ca. 1940) in New Jersey and graduated from Northeastern Bible College (B.A. and Th.B.), Dallas Theological Seminary (Th.M.) and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (D.D.).  continued his run as one of NAA's most popular draws, delivering a presentation on Redefining Leadership in Times of Change.

That presentation explained Wilkinson's definition of leadership in today's business Today's Business is a show on CNBC that aired in the early morning, 5 to 7AM ET timeslot, hosted by Liz Claman and Bob Sellers, and it was replaced by Wake Up Call on Feb 4, 2002.  world, and addressed effective ways to motivate staff ranging from Generation Y to Baby-Boomers.

"The members in the industry soak up information like a sponge," said Wilkinson, who gives more than 130 presentations per year. "I want education to be fun. And NAA members are always the first to laugh.

"I want to create that kind of mood and relationship with my audience and then give them something that they cannot wait to bring back with them to share with their staff, as well as with their senior management."

"You can really tell the members enjoy coming here. They flock here so that they can share common ground; there is a sense that they really can't wait to see each other, do some networking, and share with each other information that they know that will help each other solve problems."

Barbara Haynes, Property Manager, Mid-America Apartment Communities, Nashville, Tenn., said she has attended the conference for years, and after the Orlando conference bas told all her managers that they need to come next year.

"The educational seminars taught me a lot about customer service and how to best communicate with my employees, especially on an emotional level," said Haynes. "This is the kind of information I can bring back to the office and share with my bosses. It's always great to have the chance to exchange ideas with people from all over the country."

An Exciting Time on Trade Show Floor

The exhibit hall was packed, as members were introduced to the latest and greatest products and services from industry companies.

"We always anticipate a great showing at the NAA conference at our booth traffic-wise, and this year was no exception," said Natalie Leff, Director of Marketing for platinum sponsor Homestore.com. "This was our most profitable show ever."

"We so much enjoyed our experience at the NAA Conference," said Andrew J. Blount, Principal, REALHOUND.com, Irvine, Calif. "This was, by far, the best show we've ever had."

Through the generosity of the seven platinum sponsors, two lucky attendees had their names announced in dramatic fashion at a random drawing held Saturday on the trade show floor, and walked away with one-year leases on brand-new BMW BMW

Kathy Brooks, Vice President, Capstone Management Company, Greensboro, N.C., was one of the winners.

"All my sisters have convertibles. My granddaughter never wants to ride with me because I don't have one--I have a Buick," said Brooks. "Now she will ride with me. I am still so excited I can't believe it."

"I have been in the Property Management Business for 22 years, and this, by far, was the best convention I have ever attended. I was so excited about seeing [Giuliani], and my friends from years past. This year I made a lot of new friends, too, and I look forward to seeing them at next year's conference in New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded . Attendees also were able to tour some of the Orlando area's most prestigious properties, helping them see what those properties are doing.

Jeanne H. Strosser, Chase Management Group, Blacksburg, Va., said, "I am interested in applying their ideas in a college town, such as Blacksburg, Va. We are having challenges designing for the student communities and the tours allowed me the chance to see what things others are using."

Making the most of the Gaylord's facilities and nearby attractions such as DisneyWorld, many members were able to parlay An open programming interface (API) to a service provider's network (the network operator), developed by the Parlay Group (www.parlay.org). By enabling the customer's application to talk directly to the network, it allows the end user to have greater access to network information as well  their trip to the annual conference with the chance to enjoy a family vacation.

NAA returns to the Gaylord Palms resort in Orlando for June 9-11 in 2005.

"As an AE, what I appreciate most is the organization and thought that goes into putting together such a conference," said Judy Roettig, Chicagoland Apartment Association.

"The education that was offered was very topical for this market. It addressed the challenges that members in our industry are facing. It's so valuable for them to have such up-to-date information. What you bring back is so needed. The trade show floor had anything and everything that is going on in the apartment industry. Attending was definitely worth the time, and we all know how we treasure our time these days."

Dave Carner, Realpage.com, said, "In my 10 years of going to the NAA Conference, I cannot remember one that was better organized, attended or more successful. The educational sessions, I thought, were particularly well done and definitely well attended."

Among the educational highlights was the debut of NAA's special presentation on terrorism awareness, New Terrorism, New Uncertainty New Direction, which included an expert panel of speakers who discussed resident screening, security, crisis management, insurance and legal issues.

Educational speaker Bill Williams, J.D. Power and Associates, Westlake Village, Calif., said, "NAA did a terrific job of organizing what was obviously a massive event. Clearly all of the attendees were equally pleased with the way all of the details were organized, and the ease with which you pulled it all off.  with patriotism, former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani Rudolph William Louis "Rudy" Giuliani (born May 28, 1944) is an American lawyer, businessman, and politician from the state of New York. Formerly Mayor of New York City, Giuliani is currently seeking the Republican nomination in the 2008 United States presidential election.  delivered a powerful message, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for emergency situations, while also assuring Americans that they can and must go on living their lives to the fullest.

Giuliani, who helped with the comfort and care of our suffering, mourning nation in the days and weeks following September 11, was enthusiastically received by the crowd. The audience cheered, whistled and even rose to their feet with applause even before Giuliani was introduced. Their display of affection continued throughout Giuliani's performance.

"He was fabulous," said Nicolosi, "He was very down to Earth, a true American hero American Hero may refer to:
  • American Hero (novel), written by Larry Beinhart

. It was everything I wanted it to be. The opening video with clips from September 11 and poignant images of America was very inspiring."

Giuliani opened his presentation by leading the audience in a reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance Pledge of Allegiance, in full, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, oath that proclaims loyalty to the United States. and its national symbol. . He then thanked the crowd for all its support and the contributions it made in helping New York New York, state, United States

"The apartment industry is so important to the health, security, spirit and character of this country," he said.

His words come at a time when property managers and their staff remain on high alert in light of the recent FBI announcement of a nonspecific nonspecific /non·spe·cif·ic/ (non?spi-sif´ik)

"[The members of this industry must ask themselves], `How are you going to react when it happens?" said Giuliani. "You must realize that you cannot prevent every risk from happening. But you have to understand that the risk is not as great as you might think it is. We are a big, powerful country, and we're not going to lose to any terrorist group. We're too strong. You have to relax. You don't just stop living your life."

Lorri Meadows, Zom Residential Services, Orlando, Fla., agreed. "You can't let something as tragic as September 11 dictate the rest of your life. You can't live in fear," said Meadows, who described Giuliani as a nice, humble man; a grandfather type who she would want to invite to dinner."

"[Giuliani] drove home the point that it is important that people in our industry are prepared. We need to meet regularly with our staff and talk about ways that we can be prepared; and come up with new ideas "New Ideas" is the debut single by Scottish New Wave/Indie Rock act The Dykeenies. It was first released as a Double A-side with "Will It Happen Tonight?" on July 17, 2006. The band also recorded a video for the track. . Then we must review those plans on a regular basis to see if anything has changed."

Teddi Clanton, McSha Properties, Norman, Okla., said Giuliani's presentation was a real tear-jerker at times, "especially when he talked specifically about how he had to deal with the emergencies on September 11," she said.

"Rudy was a fantastic speaker," said Mitchell Blatt, President, Coinmach, Plainview, NY. "What I got out of it most was his lesson that we have to go on and live our life."

In a joking manner, over and over he managed to avoid speaking directly about the multifamily housing industry, instead focusing on current events such as the recent court ruling that declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional and familiar everyday circumstances such as the stupidity of dogs, parenthood and prostate checkups.

Barry did mention he owns two buildings. One of those buildings, he said, once appeared on the television news when reporters discovered that it was being invaded by a large group of diving bats.

Barry also suggested that a satellite exists that sends messages that can only be received by apartment residents that says, "Go ahead, stuff something in your toilet that is not toilet paper, and clog the toilet."

As for Florida, he explained one reason for the confusion that occurred with voting Floridians during the 2000 National Presidential Election by reminding the audience that, "You can't spell Florida without `DA' (duh)."
