2008-2009 Board of Trustees

Another first for the American Dental Assistants Association was achieved on Saturday, October 18th, with the installation of ADAA's first male president in its 84-year history.

Taking the gavel was President Stephen E. Spadaro (SGM Ret., U.S. Army) of San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Spadaro is a lifelong dental assistant and recently retired Sergeant/Major in the U.S. Army where he was Executive Officer of the U.S. Army Medical Command and for the past several years was DENCOM SGM.

Mr. Spadaro is also a Fellow of the ADAA. In addition, he was the first recipient of the Larry L. Strickland Memorial Award given by the U.S. Army and honoring a noncommissioned officer for vision and influence in "shaping future leaders while practicing excellent stewardship of the nation's most precious resource--our soldiers."

Mr. Spadaro is a graduate of Saint Stephen's High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., the University of Maryland and Thomas Edison State University. He has also received additional education at the U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy.

Personally, he is married to Cindy Spadaro and is the father of Specialist Stephen C. Spadaro of the U.S. Army.

President-Elect Angela M. Swatts, CDA, EFDA, Indianapolis, Ind.

Ms. Swatts is both a Certified and Expanded Functions Dental Assistant and has served as ADAA's Sixth District Trustee and Vice President prior to her election as President--Elect.

She is Lab Manager for O.C. Ceramics Inc., a dental-related firm in Zionsville, Indiana.

Ms. Swatts was educated at Indiana University School of Dentistry and has taught at Professional Careers Institute of Indianapolis, now Kaplan College, where she continues to serve on its advisory board. She has also served on the Indiana Licensing Board for proprietary schools. Within the Association she has been president of both the Indiana and Indianapolis Dental Assisting Associations.

Vice President Natalie Kaweckyj, CDA, RDARF, CDPMA, COA, COMSA, MADAA, B.A. Minneapolis, Minn. Nationally, Ms. Kaweckyj was elected Secretary of the ADAA in 2002, Seventh District Trustee in 2003 and 2006, and is a past director of the ADAA Foundation. She is the author of several ADAA continuing education courses.

Ms. Kaweckyj holds a B.A. in biology from Metro State University and is president of the Minnesota Educators of Dental Assistants. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in public health. She is the dental assisting program director at Herzing College, Minneapolis.

Natalie Kaweckyj is active in local, state, and national dental assisting associations and has served a three-year term as president and director of the Minnesota Dental Assistants Association and the North Suburban (Minneapolis) Dental Assistants Society.

Secretary Claudia G. Pohl, CDA, RDA, BVEd, Alta Loma, Calif.

Ms. Pohl, a Certified and Registered Dental Assistant for 33 years, has been active with the ADAA on the state and national level, serving on various committees and as president of the California Dental Assistants Association. She was most recently 12th District Trustee representing dental assistants in California, Nevada and Hawaii

She is a graduate of California State San Bernardino with a degree in vocational education and is RDA Program Director at Citrus College in Glendora. She is married to Michael Pohl and is the mother of Adam, Allison and Erin and grandmother of Lorelei Pohl.

Immediate Past President Kimberly G. Bland, CDA, EDDA, B.S., Bradenton, Fla.

Ms. Bland will continue to serve the ADAA as Chair of the Council on Finance, as well as in other capacities.
