"TechCell" to showcase the best of UV and EB technology.

It's fair to say that many people do not realize how ultraviolet (UV) and electron beam A stream of electrons, or electricity, that is directed towards a receiving object. See electron beam imaging and electron beam lithography.  (EB) curing is used in their daily lives. If RadTech International has its way, the uses and benefits of this technology will become more noticeable to end-users during the e|5 conference through the TechCell area on the show floor.

One of the main points of the TechCells is to show how UV and EB is used in everyday life, which will be illustrated by the UV/EB Super Mart, the Automotive Dealership and the House that UV/EB Built.

The Graphic Arts graphic arts: see aquatint; drawing; drypoint; engraving; etching; illustration; linoleum block printing; lithography; mezzotint; niello; pastel; poster; silk-screen printing; silhouette; silverpoint; sketch; stencil; woodcut and wood engraving.  Focus Group, chaired by David Biro of Sun Chemical and Don Duncan of Wikoff Color, is stocking up the UV/EB Super Mart to show UV and EB technologies in the items consumers use everyday.

"We're setting up a UV/EB supermarket displaying UV/EB converted items in a store environment, with descriptions of the advantages of UV and EB for these items," Dr. Biro said. "We'll have everything from ice cream and cereal boxes to juice cartons, pet food and fertilizer bags, books and magazines, liquor boxes and lottery tickets, as well as cosmetics and personal care items."

Automotive is another key segment where UV is flourishing. The UV Automotive Focus Group, chaired by Chuck Cameron of Ciba and Chris Bradford of Elementis Specialties, and the UV Automotive Refinish re·fin·ish

and Paul Mills of IST, will have a joint area where attendees will be able to see vehicles utilizing UV curing and individual parts, as well as future applications such as spraying UV powder onto wheel wells.

"Our Automotive Dealership will demonstrate the present use and future opportunities for UV from the perspective of OEMs, Tier 1 component processes and refinishing Refinishing in woodworking and decorative arts means fixing or redoing the finishing paint, varnish or other top coating of an object, from resanding to new paint and new varnish. The artisan or restorer is traditionally aiming for an improved or restored and renewed finish. ," said Mr. Bradford. "We're showing what can be done today and what may happen in the future."

On the refinish side, there will be an opportunity to see UV technology in action. "We will have a virtual body shop, where we will have some body parts that are done by UV such as rub rails and headlight assemblies," said Mr. Richards. "We also will have real-life parts that we will scratch and dent, which we will put UV primer on and show how quickly it finishes the repair process."

The Wood Focus Group, chaired by Don Hart of Mid America Protective Coatings and Bill Sparks Royal Marine Bill Sparks DSM (September 5 1922 – December 1 2002)

of UV Systems, is also taking a consumer focus for the House that UV/EB Built, featuring a home office and kitchen.

"We're going to showcase wood-based products such as pre-finished wood flooring Wood flooring is a type of flooring made from the timber of hardwoods, or of spruce or hard pine. There are two basic manufactured types of hardwood. Wood flooring comes unfinished, and once installed is sanded, then finished on site. , hardwood cabinets, some furniture that has been UV powder coated and even UV-coated shutters. This all shows how UV has become mainstream now," Mr. Hart said.

Other technical areas will be out to prove skeptics wrong, dispel myths and show UV technologies in a variety of areas, such as printing, plastics, PSAs and more.

The UV Ink Jet See inkjet printer.  Focus Group, chaired by David Harbourne of Fusion UV and Jim Balcerski of Sartomer, will show the capabilities of UV in ink jet, particularly jetting opaque white ink. The TechCell will feature an Aellora printer jetting opaque white on a plastic substrate.

"By showing this, we are going to demonstrate print UV ink at production speeds," said Mr. Harbourne.

"In addition, white is considered the most difficult color to cure due to the fact that titanium dioxide typically reflects UV, and this will show UV's capabilities.

People say that they will have to see this to believe it, and this will be the proof. UV ink jet is still a very new technology, and the message is that there are new markets for UV. This is one of them."

The TechCell being created by the Plastics Focus Group, chaired by Jim Kassner of Bayer Polymers and Paul Snowwhite of Borden Chemical, will work on dispelling myths and showing the basic applications for UV.

"For example, we are going to show drawdowns using pigmented coatings, to dispel the myth that you can only use UV coatings on clears," said Mr. Kassner. "We are also going to use some plasma preparation for plastic surface, which is a big issue for plastics."

The Adhesives Focus Group, chaired by Im Rangwalla of Energy Sciences and Alice Pincus of Pincus Associates, is also taking an educational approach, dividing its TechCell into three sub-groups: pressure sensitive adhesives Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA, self adhesive, self stick adhesive) is adhesive that forms a bond when pressure is applied to marry the adhesive with the adherend. No solvent, water, or heat is needed to activate the adhesive.  (PSA (Professional Services Automation) An information system designed to organize, track and manage all opportunities, work, resources, costs, revenues and invoices to improve the productivity and efficiency of the workforce. ), laminating adhesives and assembly adhesives.

skin contact PSAs will be made using Nordson equipment and a UV-hot melt adhesive.

"There has always been a skepticism toward UV skin contact PSAs, but Collano and BASF have developed materials that are approved for direct skin contact, and attendees will be able to take samples to examine what we can do," Mr. Rangwalla said.

The laminating adhesives subgroup will distribute samples of snack pouches, which are made from laminates using instantaneously cured UV/EB laminating adhesives. The assembly adhesives sub-group will show samples of DVDs which are laminated using UV adhesives, as well as other commercially available UV/EB cured structural engineered products.

"In addition, the TechCell will have an 'Adhesive Product Showcase,'" Mr. Rangwalla added. "This showcase will have commercially available products from each of the adhesive sub-groups with posters describing why these products were made with UV/EB technology."

Educating potential end-users on how to measure UV process is also essential, and the UV Measurement Focus Group has plenty of information and exhibits prepared to help in that area.

"We're going to have a series of ongoing demonstrations on the proper use of radiometers, the different types of radiometers and interpreting the data, plus measurement experts will be available to answer questions," said Robin Wright of 3M, who is co-chair of the UV Measurement Focus Group along with Dick Stowe of Fusion UV.

The TechCells will offer a great deal of information about present and future UV and EB uses to attendees, and may indeed spark greater interest among end-users.
