Nov. 7 Benefit Concert Will Focus On the Plight of Teenage

Women Suffering From Drug and Alcohol Dependency

"Sons of Champlin The Sons of Champlin is an American rock band, formed in the late 1960's and hailing from the San Francisco-Bay area. They are fronted by vocalist/keyboardist/guitarist Bill Champlin, who is also a member of the rock band Chicago. ," the influential, psychedelic rock band featuring Bill Champlin of the group Chicago; and Sy Klopps, the bluesman alter-ego of legendary rock entrepreneur Herbie Herbert, will anchor the Seventh Annual Thunder Road Toast & Jam.

This year's event, expected to raise $100,000 for scholarships for the Thunder Road residential drug treatment program for teens, will happen on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Bimbo's 365 Club.

Bimbo's is going retro for the occasion, bringing back the decor of the 1930s and marking the official reappearance of "The Girl in the Fishbowl." A VIP reception kicks off the evening at 5:15 p.m. Doors open for the silent auction, dinner and Toast at 6:15 p.m.; 9 p.m. for the Jam concert.

Media representatives are invited to attend the artists' sound check which runs from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the day of the benefit. During that time, reporters will have the opportunity to talk to the performers and -- most importantly Adv. 1. most importantly - above and beyond all other consideration; "above all, you must be independent"

Sharing the stage with "Sons of Champlin" and Sy Klopps will be a lineup of surprise musical guests. . For the first time in the event's history, two women are being honored as Thunder Road spotlights the under-representation of females receiving care in drug and alcohol recovery programs. As one troubling statistic indicates, for every five males receiving treatment for drug and alcohol abuse, only two females are granted similar care.

The dinner will feature the debut of the jazz-pop band, The Mary Birch Trio, featuring the wife of the late drummer Gaylord Birch Gaylord Birch (March 10, 1946 - April 14, 1996) was a drummer for the bands Santana, Pointer Sisters & Herbie Hancock as well as being a honey dripper.

Birch was the drummer for the Pointer Sisters during 1974 and performed many live performances with the group.

Previous Toast & Jam events have collectively raised more than $250,000 for Thunder Road. Last year, the benefit recognized Mayor Willie Brown and featured legendary Memphis soul man Boz Scaggs. Past honorees have also included Jerry Seltzer, founder of BASS Tickets and co-chair of this year's event; Jim Topping, former KGO-TV President; and Joel Selvin, founder of the event.

Tickets are available through BASS Tickets (510/762-BASS), the Summit Medical Center Foundation (510/869-6720) or at the door the night of the show. A limited supply of tickets for the Toast portion of the evening will be available at the door.

Thunder Road is a residential drug rehabilitation program for teenagers and their families located in Oakland. It is the only such program in Northern California that offers scholarships to youth whose families lack the resources to pay for treatment. Thunder Road has provided residential treatment and counseling services to over 3,400 children and their families.
