He plays at centre-back for Manchester United in the FA Premier League and at the international level for the England national football team.  and Michael Carrick Michael Adrian Carrick (born 28 July 1981 in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear) is an English footballer who currently plays for Manchester United as a midfielder. Club career  hang their heads after England slumped to defeat in their World Cup qualifier in Ukraine last night.

The hosts won 1-0 thanks to Serhiy Nazarenko's 30th minute shot which was diverted into the net off Ashley Cole Ashley Cole (born 20 December 1980, Stepney, London) is an English footballer of Barbadian descent. Cole plays left back for Chelsea and for the England national team, a position from which he often uses his strong pace to try and support the forward players. .

England were always on the back foot following the 15th minute dismissal of goalkeeper Robert Green for a professional foul on Artem Milevskiy after Ferdinand's error, although Andriy Shevchenko smashed the resulting penalty off the post.

The result brought to an end already-qualified England's 100 per cent record in Group Six but sees Ukraine jump above Croatia, who did not play yesterday, into second place in the race for a play-off place.

Both teams have one game left to play, with Ukraine strongly favoured as they travel to play group whipping boys Andorra on Wednesday.

Croatia face a Kazakhstan side thrashed 4-0 today in Belarus.
