Business Editors

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 13, 2002

In 2003 it merged with the British Tourist Authority to form VisitBritain.  today welcomed Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell's announcement of "radical change" for the English Tourism Council, to enable English tourism to compete more effectively with other countries.

Addressing the anomaly whereby English tourism is currently not promoted at a national level to people who live in the UK, Tessa Jowell announced plans to reform the marketing of England as England A refers to England's developmental national teams in several sports. Players on these teams often "graduate" to slots on the appropriate senior national team. The phrase may refer to:
  • England A - rugby league
  • England A cricket team
a tourist destination A tourist destination is a city, town or other area the economy of which is dependent to a significant extent on the revenues accruing from tourism.

It may contain one or more tourist attractions or visitor attractions and possibly some "tourist traps".

We look forward to joining in further discussions with the Government and industry on this new agenda to provide support for everyone working in English tourism."

ETC also welcomed Tessa Jowell's announcement of a stronger role for Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) in the strategic leadership of tourism and Regional Tourist Boards as the natural delivery partners for the RDAs.
