"Prohibition Is Here to Stay"."Prohibition Is Here to Stay" Jason S. Lantzer University of Notre Dame Press 310 Flanner Hall, Notre Dame, IN 46556 9780268033835, $35.00 www.undpress.nd.edu Jason S. Lantzer (adjunct history faculty member, Indiana University-Purdue University) presents "Prohibition Is Here to Stay": The Reverend Edward S. Shumaker and the Dry Crusade in America, a sympathetic yet studiously researched biography of Reverend Edward Shumaker, with a focus on the Indiana prohibition movement and the role he played in it. For nearly twenty-five years, Shumaker led Indiana's highly effective chapter of the Anti Saloon League; he was one of the most powerful leaders of the Indiana movement against alcohol, and his influence extended well past Indiana's borders during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Presenting evidence that the prohibition movement in Indiana was not happenstance or abnormal, but rather an effect of the mainstream cultural currents of the era, "Prohibition Is Here to Stay" uses Indiana as a lens to further examine larger issues of America's transformation from a rural to an urban majority, as well as the consequent shift in cultural values and the repercussions of industrialization and foreign immigration. A thoughtful, well-researched and persuasively presented study, highly recommended especially for college library collections. |
