"Mourning marriage".

Toronto -- William Gairdner, a Canadian social conservative writer, has published a new book, Oh, Oh, Canada!, in which he describes the pitiful state of our country. One essay in the book, Mourning marriage, is a repudiation of Canada's "enthusiastic embrace of gay marriage." In the essay, Gairdner talks about this "most foolhardy social experiment," where same-sex marriage is not a right, same-sex persons cannot "unite" in "conjugality," and love" is no argument for state benefits.

He takes the Canadian state to task for its major role in the demolition of marriage. He says that "the key difference between modern America and Canadian issues such as gay marriage is that America has not abandoned as entirely as Canada its traditional belief that justice must be rooted in a spiritual and natural reality. Since the Trudeau era, however, Canada has wholly surrendered itself to the crassly materialistic and egalitarian mentality of the welfare state, where all public debate is reduced to a kind of internal civil war over equality and rights ... One of the last barriers to this frankly socialistic program has been the traditional definition of marriage as the union of a man and woman, with all its historical privileges and protections.
