With no place to turn many of vulnerable elders were forced into emergency shelters Emergency shelters are places for people to live temporarily when they can't live in their previous residence, similar to homeless shelters. The main difference is that an emergency shelter typically specializes in people fleeing a specific type of situation, such as battered or on to the streets. Established in 1986 with a grant from a consortium of national and local foundations, The Elders Living at Home Program (ELHAP) provides homeless and at-risk elders with access to safe, affordable housing and supportive services allowing them to attain a stable life, permanent housing and independence. The program provides geriatric assessment geriatric assessment, n the evaluation of the physical, mental, and emotional health of elderly patients. , case management, transitional living and stabilization and has helped over 800 homeless elders find permanent housing over the past 20 years. These elders comprise the most vulnerable, disadvantaged population who desperately need access to health care and housing in order to live a life of dignity and independence. Although the program has been very successful, economic and demographic factors have witnessed an increase in elders living in emergency shelters and on the streets. In March 2000, ELAHP was awarded a contract by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs to establish the first-ever emergency shelter and service program for homeless elders in the Pine Street Inn. The Elder Residential Assessment and Placement Program, or ERAPP, provides intensive assessment and case management services in a safe setting to elders who are homeless.
