"Lettering" the high school athlete. Not sure how to "letter" athletes during or after your sport season? Do you ever have a player or his parents complain about the boy's failure to "letter"? Liberty High School Football utilizes a point system that simplifies the award system for coaches and puts it all in black and white for athletes and parents. The development of the system has evolved from various clinics, consultations with coaches from other schools, and constant study of the programs from around the country that have motivated mo·ti·vate tr.v. mo·ti·vat·ed, mo·ti·vat·ing, mo·ti·vates To provide with an incentive; move to action; impel. mo and lettered their athletes. The system places the responsibility on the athletes. In order to letter, the athlete has to earn 25 points during the course of the year (in-season and off-season). The system is set up to reward both the dedicated athlete who does everything our coaches ask him to do, but may not be particularly talented, or see much game time; as well as the athlete who performs well in games. The majority of players who letter must be involved in off-season activities as well as games. The three ways of gaining letter points in our system include: game participation and performance, off-season participation, and responsible behavior. GAME PARTICIPATION: Players earn one point for every game played, even if it's it's 1. Contraction of it is. 2. Contraction of it has. See Usage Note at its. it's it is or it has it's be ~have just for one play. We count kicking as a point. GAME PERFORMANCE: Each game has a list of offensive, defensive, and special teams goals--points scored, points given up, kick yardage yard·age 1 n. 1. An amount or length measured in yards. 2. Cloth sold by the yard. Noun 1. gained, etc. As the team achieves those goals, each player who was in (for offense, defense, kicking) gets one performance point. For every four game performance points, the player gets one additional letter point. (For every game performance point, we also award a small helmet sticker--players LOVE those stickers!) We also award such stickers for kicking game tackles and a letter point for every four of those stickers awarded. OFF-SEASON PARTICIPATION: To motivate the players to attend off-season workouts and team functions, we reward them with letter points. This includes our winter, spring, and summer strength/speed training, QB/WR and lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:
Players who do well on spring and fall strength/speed testing are rewarded with letter points. We also award two points to a player who participates in some other Liberty High School sponsored sport. RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOR: Players are rewarded (or penalized pe·nal·ize tr.v. pe·nal·ized, pe·nal·iz·ing, pe·nal·iz·es 1. To subject to a penalty, especially for infringement of a law or official regulation. See Synonyms at punish. 2. ) for a variety of activities that we deem responsible behavior. Athletes with perfect attendance at practice earn five points. For every unexcused absence, a player loses one point. He will also gain a point for incurring in·cur tr.v. in·curred, in·cur·ring, in·curs 1. To acquire or come into (something usually undesirable); sustain: incurred substantial losses during the stock market crash. 2. no team rule violations during the season. A player with a violation loses five points. Participation in team fundraisers adds points. So do making the school academic honor roll honor roll n. A list of names of people worthy of honor, especially: a. A list of students who have earned high grades during a specified period. b. A list of people who have served in the armed forces. . Straight A's are worth four points. Turning in equipment on time (or not) gains or deducts points. COACHES PREROGATIVE An exclusive privilege. The special power or peculiar right possessed by an official by virtue of his or her office. In English Law, a discretionary power that exceeds and is unaffected by any other power; the special preeminence that the monarch has over and above all others, POINTS: As coaches we have the prerogative of awarding one to three points to a player who is close to earning a letter. We will always give the player the letter. It is better to have many "letter-winners" rather than too few. The letter really means something to the player and will encourage him to participate in the program. We pro-rate the letter points for the injured in·jure tr.v. in·jured, in·jur·ing, in·jures 1. To cause physical harm to; hurt. 2. To cause damage to; impair. 3. players who could not complete the season. We also include players who contribute uniquely to the team as a possible letter winner. IN ADDITION, A PLAYER MUST: 1. Return all issued equipment in acceptable condition. 2. Finish the season in good standing. 3. Attend the Awards Ceremony at the end of the season. Letter points earned are posted periodically throughout the year. For football, we post the total points in mid-February n. 1. the middle part of February. Noun 1. mid-February - the middle part of February period, period of time, time period - an amount of time; "a time period of 30 years"; "hastened the period of time of his recovery"; "Picasso's blue , at the end of May, and four times during the football season (about every three weeks). We post Game Participation and Performance points on Monday Monday: see week. following each week's game. POSITIVE ASPECTS ABOUT THE LETTER POINT SYSTEM INCLUDE: 1. Makes the awarding of a "letter" possible for all dedicated athletes. 2. Lets the athletes know exactly where they stand and what they have to do to letter. 3. The athletes' standing as potential letter winners is crystal clear to everyone involved in the process. If there is a drawback DRAWBACK, com. law. An allowance made by the government to merchants on the reexportation of certain imported goods liable to duties, which, in some cases, consists of the whole; in others, of a part of the duties which had been paid upon the importation. to the system, it might be the degree of paperwork required on a yearlong year·long adj. Lasting one year. Adj. 1. yearlong - lasting through a year; "attending yearlong courses" long - primarily temporal sense; being or indicating a relatively great or greater than average duration or basis. The school must be very organized to maintain the system. A coach must be willing to adjust it yearly as conditions warrant. The "Letter Points System" has worked very well for us in Lancer Football. It has proved fair for the players, reasonable for the parents, and manageable for the coaches.
