"L.A. Unified plan aims for fewer dropouts".

Under pressure caused by the city's high drop out rate, the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  (LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA) ) announced its latest initiative aimed at keeping students in school. The plan is to place all of the district's alternatives to traditional high school, including continuation schools continuation school: see vocational education. , schools for pregnant students and schools for independent study under the division that runs the adult and continuing education continuing education: see adult education.

The LAUSD hopes to double the enrollment in their programs for students who need alternatives to the traditional high school. LAUSD officials want to ensure that students are informed about the options available to them, and to eventually place those options in a series of comprehensive "education and career centers" that would allow one-stop shopping for wayward students, with a strong focus on career and technical education.
