It was established in 1975. An annual subscription costs $30 for individuals and $45 for institutions. AASM said the journal carries manuscripts of clinical trials, clinical reviews, clinical commentary and debate, information on medical economic/practice issues, and case reports and case series, as well as proceedings from conferences and workshops sponsored by related industry and other organizations related to improving the practice of sleep medicine. Editorial in initial issues include articles on: driving while sleepy as a criminal offense; treatment of sleep apnea sleep apnea, episodes of interrupted breathing during sleep.
