"John Hilliard - Works 1969-99".WORTTEMBERGISCHER KUNSTVEREIN In the '70s, a survey of recent British art would scarcely have omitted the work of John Hilliard, who came to public attention in the Hayward Gallery's celebrated 1972 exhibition "The New Art." Hilliard was an extraordinarily methodical investigator of the properties of the photograph - time, chance, focus, and frame - frequently with poetic, eccentric, and amusing results. His early black-and-white works were a little sober for English taste, and Hilliard, as a name to conjure with, faded like a Polaroid.
