"IMPROVING THE ODDS FOR SUCCESS IN DEFENSE CONVERSION" IS THE TOPIC AT JUNE 11 SEMINAR

NEWPORT, R.I., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Government and industry officials will head "Improving the Odds for Success in Defense Conversion" -- a June 11 seminar in Warwick, R.I., sponsored by the Newport Division of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. Several conversion experts and panels of policy experts will discuss state and federal support, market trends, and case studies of recently successful conversions.
Erik R. Pages of the Business Executives for National Security (BENS) in Washington D.C., tops the list of experts as keynote speaker. Manager of Policy Programs for BENS and a leading voice on conversion successes, Pages will present "What Has Worked In Recent Conversions and Why," and "What Should the Strategic Plan for a Team Contain?" during the day-long session.
Pages serves as director of the BENS Defense Transitions Project, where he examines and develops effective transition strategies for firms, workers, or communities affected by defense cutbacks. Author of "Weathering the Defense Transition: A Business-Based Approach to Defense Conversion," Pages has served as a research assistant for the Association of the Army and also as a foreign affairs analyst at the Congressional Research Service.
William T. Hanley, president and CEO of Galileo Electro-Optics, will be the luncheon speaker. Galileo is a defense contractor who successfully transitioned from being 100 percent defense-dependent to having a predominantly civilian business base in the areas of remote sensors, night-vision devices, and laser technology.
Panelists include Dr. Diane Disney, Rhode Island Director of Defense Economic Adjustment and area economy expert at the University of Rhode Island, and Dr. Fred Maryanski, associate provost of the University of Connecticut, with presentations on university support for defense conversion projects.
Other major topics include products, markets, and resources, presented by Domenick Bertell, director of the Conversion Information Center of the Council of Economic Priorities, and available Navy technologies and patents, presented by Dr. William Roderick, director of science & technology at the Newport Undersea Warfare Center.
The day-long event is sponsored by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport, which is interested in attracting industry attention to its potential for defense conversion partnerships. It begins at 8:00 a.m. at The Inn at the Crossings in Warwick, R.I.
