"I am Not My Disability".

Thirty high school juniors and seniors with disabilities from across Wisconsin attended the state's First Annual Youth Leadership Forum to learn about overcoming barriers to employment and social participation by improving their advocacy and leadership skills. Delegates were chosen by a panel of judges in a competitive process that focused on already demonstrated leadership skills.

Participants toured the state capitol and attended a luncheon with representatives from their districts. They also were paired with a mentor who had similar career interests and barriers to overcome. Delegates organized and hosted a talent show which gave participants opportunities to demonstrate their remarkable skills and talents. Free time was spent socializing with peers, with an end-of-the-week dance, and in other activities. Special guest speakers with varying disabilities, identified leaders in their fields and communities, were invited to discuss topics such as assistive technology, self-advocacy, independent living, recreation, the ADA, and careers. Having never been exposed to other types of disabilities, many found inspiration from seeing how much their peers could accomplish.
