"Ex-gays" beware: the man who caught "ex-gay" John Paulk in a gay bar debunks the movement in a new book.


The "ex-gay" movement knows no more active nor ardent foe than Wayne Besen Wayne Besen is a gay rights advocate in the United States. He is a former spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign.

Besen, a gay man, was never personally involved in the ex-gay movement, but says he has interviewed hundreds of former and current ex-gays.

Besen spent four years researching and writing Anything but Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-Gay Myth, a book that offers enlightening and often disturbing insight into the people who run the nation's loose confederation of ex-gay ministries and the desperate folk who seek them out.

"I've met several [ex-gays] along the way, and it's rewarding, because some of them have even said that my work on the issue helped them come out of it. And I think that's the best thing I can hear. That's wonderful."
