"After the Wall: Art and Culture in Post-Communist Europe".MODERNA MUSEET It's been ten years since the Berlin Wall Berlin Wall, 1961–89, a barrier first erected in Aug., 1961, by the East German government along the border between East and West Berlin, and later extended along the entire border between East Germany and West Germany. It was built to halt large numbers of defections and to prevent E. Berliners commuting to the West. Erected at a time of growing tension between East and West, the barbed wire was eventually replaced by concrete topped with wire. came down, and the time is ripe for a closer look at artistic activities in Europe's eastern reaches. The most ambitious survey to date is being staged this fall by independent curator Bojana Pejic in collaboration with the Moderna Museet's David Elliott and Iris Muller-Westermann. "After the Wall" includes recent work (mid-'80s to the present) by some 120 artists, photographers, and filmmakers from more than twenty countries. Among the artists participating are Oleg Oleg (ō`leg, Rus. ôlĕk`) or Oleh (ôlĕkh`), d. c.912, founder of Kievan Rus. Kulik, Veronika Bromova, Katarzyna Kozyra, and Nedko Solakov, all of whom belong to the first generation to emerge after the collapse of communism.
