During a news conference Tuesday, Blackwood's relatives remembered him as the pillar of the family and a well-known figure in his Van Nuys neighborhood. ``We relied on him for everything,'' said Larry Blackwood, the victim's son. ``He was always there for everybody. He was the patriarch patriarch, in the Bible

Family members were shocked and saddened at the actions of the hit- and-run driver.

``How could you leave someone?'' said Lorraine Blackwood, Ralph's daughter-in-law. ``How could you just hit a person and drive away? It's someone without a heart, and we want this heartless heart·less

Police said they have few clues.

``We have no suspect information,'' Valley Traffic Division Detective Grace Torres said. ``Valley Traffic Division conducted an extensive investigation, and we are exhausting all leads. We are asking for the assistance from the public.''

Blackwood is the 13th pedestrian killed this year, and the third to die in a hit-and-run accident, Torres said. Last year, there were 38 fatal auto- pedestrian accidents.
